14 ways to help your toddler with balance and coordination

Coordination is the ability to move two or more body parts simultaneously. Balance and coordination are essential for your child to reach important developmental milestones such as climbing stairs, climbing furniture, walking in general and on different surfaces, leaning over to pick up objects on the floor, feeding themselves, sitting up, and so on. As any parent knows, there are numerous milestones. Balance and coordination are also two of the four skills that underpin physical literacy. Physical literacy, the motivation, confidence and physical competence, knowledge, and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities. – The International Physical Literacy Association, May 2014.

Susan Scandiffio talks about 14 ways to help balance and coordination in toddlers. As your toddler pushes themselves, their balance and coordination will improve. Among the 14 different ways are:

–       On the stairs

–       The flat “balance beam”

–       Freeze dance

–       The (less steady) tightrope

–       Keep the ball rolling

–       The high(ish) beam

–       Stepping stones

–       Frog jump

–       Balance board

–       Exercise ball – Toddler Edition

–       Playgrounds

–       Get a kick out of it

–       Balance bike

The more opportunities toddlers have to improve their balance and concentration, the easier it will be for them to move smoothly, confidently, and comfortably.
